Last week I attended the Illinois Computer Educator’s (ICE) Conference in St. Charles, IL. This is the second year I attended the conference. Last year, I went to a pre-conference workshop on how to use pivot tables in Excel, which was interesting, but this year I attended the actual conference. They are many sessions to choose from, and I chose to focus mostly on sessions about new web 2.0 tools (which aren’t all actually web 2.0) and how to implement them.
On a side note, I would like to define web 2.0. Web 2.0 technologies are technologies that utilize two-way information. Continue Reading…

Let me begin by saying that I am a teacher, I love being a teacher, and there is nothing in the world I could imagine doing with my life right now. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was 16 years old and that is because I had good teachers who inspired a love of education in me. I teach because I want to share my love of Physics and Science with children and because I want to install in them the love of education and learning that was instilled in me. I also want to provide a positive role model for students. I want to show them what it means to be a responsible well rounded adult. I believe that by modeling appropriate behaviors, I can instill those behaviors and attitudes in children. I believe that by doing this I will make the world a better place and that I will help those students become successful adults.

I’ve made decision…
Everyone in high school should have to take at least one technology education class! (Gavel bangs and everyone stares in shocked silence.)
By technology education I mean metals, woods, plastics, etc…
Between watching Hank Hill (King of the Hill on Fox) and building a few things myself recently, I think these are indispensable skills. I know kids are on a tight schedule, and it is important to take traditional academic classes, but classes like shop are important too as they teach people skills they can’t learn anywhere else. Like where else do you learn that a 2 x 4 is actually 1.5″ x 3.5″ and if you go over 2″ it changes more, like a 2 x 6 is actually 1.5″ x 5.25″ (or something like that.) Where else would you learn that standard sheet of plywood is 4′ x 8′? The list goes on.
I took small engines in high school and I learned more in that one semester than probably in two years of English, because I started with ZERO knowledge. Could I safely disassemble an engine today? Maybe. But I can tell you that should not tighten the bolts on your cylinder head one at a time, rather you should get them all on and close to tight and the do them all a little gradually. I also could explain the difference between a 4-stroke and 2-stroke engine. More importantly, I can tell you that in a 2-stroke engine you have to mix the gas and the oil and in a 4-stroke, the oil has a separate pan. That is useful information!
Well, now that I have decided, it should be this way and everyone will obey, someone call George, I’ll call Rod, let’s get on this.

Why do people work, fight, and cheat there way into this country to achieve the “American Dream” and then not impress upon their children the importance of education? Education is the basis of the dream, and these kids don’t get that.
I had a young man say to me he couldn’t wait until he was 16 so he could drop out of school. I asked why he thought that was a good idea and he told me that lot’s of famous people didn’t go to school. When asked to name a few he said TV stars and rappers. I walked away scared for the future.
