American Idol Recap — 5 May

Idol was good tonight. I am not a big rock & roll guy so I don’t always get what is good, apparently, but all of the singers did well. I think I am done with Kara DioGuardi. Once she said “Rock God” to Adam I was close to being done. He is good, so that may be acceptable, but then saying Allison is a “Rock Goddess,” is a little over the top and she lost me. It really seems like she is trying to popular at times. When she critiques at times she has some interesting insight into the songs involved, since she is a song writer, but I don’t know that I feel that she has added anything to the show other than time. I tend to agree with former Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe that they shouldn’t have added a fourth judge.

The set was falling apart tonight and that caused the dress rehearsal to be disrupted. I don’t think that affected the show, but I did notice that it affected Paula Abdul’s comments. You may recall when Paula messed up a few years ago with Jason Castro’s comments after dress rehearsal and the changing of the shows order. Paula’s comments tonight were definitely not as solid as other weeks, so I wondering if she didn’t have a chance to get her thoughts together.

I liked the duets they added. At first when Ryan Seacrest started the show, I thought they were all going to be duets, so I was a little concerned, but just having two of them worked well I think. Now the recap:

Adam Lambert

Adam did not take my advice and just did the same kind of song he does every week. I don’t know what else to say. He sings it really well, but I am growing tired of the over the top performances that tend to blend together. I did like the end of his song when sang the little part without the band. I just expect a little more out of him than to just sing the same old songs. I just would think that after being in the bottom two who would have changed up his standard performance in order to get more votes.

Allison Iraheta

Allison did a great job. She came out strong with a song I felt like she connected with. She still falls into the “idol trap” at times of just repeating lyrics and living and dying with the big long note. That is sometimes a function of the song, and tonight it worked for her. I still would like to see her connect with a more youthful song. Maybe Avril Lavinge would have worked for her. However, I did feel that she connected with the song and that came across. She doesn’t necessarily need to chirp with Simon though.

Kris Allen

Kris did not step it up on idol this week. The call for rockers was put out and he fell flat. I think he is trouble. It is not that he sang it poorly or anything like that, it is just that it was not a real strong performance and if you are singing rock you need to have a little edge. He was still smiley pretty boy. That will work find once he is making and album, but in terms of this contest it needs to be better.

Danny Gokey

Danny answered the call on Idol. He brought a rock edge and showed his growth and strength as a singer. The last note on the show was not very good, but when they showed the clip with Slash he hit that note well so I was really excited, but then he choked on the show. I think his overall performance on the show will carry him through. I was impressed to hear that he has not been in the bottom three yet. If he stays out next week he will be only the 8th person to make it through the show without being in the bottom. However, that doesn’t guarantee a win.

In the end I think Kris will go home.
