American Idol Recap — 14 April

American Idol keeps getting better each week. I wasn’t a big fan of the judging system, but I guess they need to save time. I would rather they go to a 90 minute show and let them all talk. Or at least Simon, because I want to know what he has to say. During the show you could definately see the pain on his face when he wanted to speak, but wasn’t allowed to. I give him props for not interjecting when I know he wanted to. I am still trying to give Kara a chance, but I haven’t found her real insightful as of yet. Paula has definitely stepped up her game this year. At times I wonder if she has a writer, but she seems to be trying to stay a step ahead of Kara.

Here are my thoughts on the contestants:

  • I was not really inspired by Allison’s performance and I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing. It was sung very well, but kind of boring. I guess I still have a hard time believing a 16 year old singing a song about angst like that. I try not to hold it against her, but I would think there has to be a song that matches her well. In my world she moved down a level in terms of overall performing, even though I concede that she is a great singer.
  • Anoop had decent showmanship on with Everything I Do, but he was singing the song dressed in jeans and an untucked dress shirt. I have a hard beleiving him singing a love song dressed like that. When I hear that song I picture Kevin Costner with fire and death all around him; a man’s man! When Anoop comes out dressed in preppy clothing, it is hard to get into the song. He sang it well and I think he took some risks, but it’s about more than that now. It needs to be a whole package and image.
  • Adam Lambert rocked the house. It’s not my style of music, but you can’t deny that he has talent. I would like to see a little less makeup (like Simon said about The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and no skipping on stage. He is on a whole different level apart from the rest of the contestants (besides maybe Matt.)
  • Matt Giraud played To Real Love a Woman (Another nice Bryan Adams song) very nice tonight. I liked his interpretation, but I was a little too fancy in terms of trying to do too much with the song. He just needed to pick a style and go with it. I liked his song choice, it allowed him to played the piano well and take some freedom with the song.

  • Danny was okay on idol. I miss the glasses because it gives me something to think about. The song was a little boring, but well sung. He needs to do something original and exciting soon or he may end up leaving before he wants. He is talented, but he isn’t standing out from the crowd enough (especially with the contacts.)
  • Kris sang very pretty on idol. Again I found the song a little boring and it ended very abruptly, but it was very good. Usually he is a little more creative and inventive, but he was being a little too safe tonight.
  • Lil finally took a song, The Rose, and made it her own, which is overdue for her. In my opinion this was her best performance and it may save her from leaving. She claims to have put an R&B spin on the song, but I didn’t really get that vibe.

So, in the end, it looks like Anoop is going to have to go home. It is not because he is a bad singer, he is a little inconsistent, but he is not at the same level at the rest. Coming into the night, I would have thought that Lil would go home, but I felt like she did enough to save herself. I am going to vote for Adam, Matt, and Kris.
