Big Bowling Win

The bowling team won the Rockford Guilford Survivor tournament by 2 points. This was a very stressful event. Going into the 5 game we were down by 120. After the 5th game, we were up by 30 with 1 game to go and squeeked it out by 2 points! Phew…

We had one kid bowl a 289 (which means he missed 1 pin on the second shot in the 10th frame) that was also very stressful. Who knew bowling could be so exciting.

What makes it so stressful is that the scoring is not straight forward. If you are familiar with bowling scoring you know what I mean. You get bonus points if you bowl well after a strike or a spare, so you can’t always tell where you stand.

That’s all for now, the house is coming along, and the football team made state, so I will be down in Champagne for that.

Cheers.

Bowling and Heroes…

It’s been a while to post, but I feel like writing.

I am the boy’s varsity bowling coach now at LZHS. It is an interesting job given that I know very little about bowling, but I have a couple of father’s that have been very helpful as far as the technical coaching goes. Our first match is tomorrow and should be exciting.

I have been watching Heroes on NBC recently. It is a fanatastic show. I am not sure if it will have more than one season, but this season will be good.

Everything I need to know, I learned from Google…

Recently I finally discovered two web programming techniques I have been trying to figure out for a long time.

Last Updated Web Page Time

The first was to figure out how to automatically include the last updated date in a web page. I found this information in kind of a round about way at . The problem in finding the code is that it is a server side script which means that the page has to have a .shtml extension. However, if you view the page source, you only see the results of the script, not the actual script. Well, after a lot of searching, here is the code.

Last Updated:
I am not exactly sure how the date formatting works, but your can probably figure it out. This will save me a lot of time.

Different Cascading Style Sheet for IE, Firefox, or any Browser

Another problem I was recently having was making my page display properly in both FireFox and Internet Explorer. I tend to code my pages to work in FF because it is closer to W3C compliance than is IE. But, both count pixels incorrectly, (I think) and more annoyingly, they both count pixels differently! So, I was able to code my page properly for IE and properly for FF, but not at the same time. After some searching I found the answer (although I don’t remember where). You have to code something like this:

Because CSS is Cascading the second CSS takes precedence if the user is using IE and not something else.

Have a nice night.

Pluto is Dead

The international community (at least some of them) have declared that Pluto is no longer a planet, rather it is a dwarf planet. I think this is an extremely cool event. I always wanted to know who makes those kinds of decisions and who has that authority, now we know. Ultimately I guess the new definition will only stick as long as people accept it. This has got to be a big boom for the text book industry too, because now they have to re-write (and re-sell of course) text books to account for this change.

Personally, I think it is a good decision. Where does Pluto get off thinking it is a planet. It is a little chunk of rock, smaller than our moon (I beleive) that doesn’t even bother staying in the same plane as the rest of the planets. Unbelievable!

I am happy with 8 planets. I think it is a good move. I am anxious to see how the rest of the world accepts this.

New Blog…

This is my new blog. I have flipped flop back and forth deciding whether or not I want to have a blog at all, and if I do, whether or not I want to host it myself or on one of the popular sites. Ultimately, I decided to do it on my own server so I can play around with the formatting a bit and because my school block LiveJournal.

My main motivation right now for blogging is to track the process that I make on my new house as far as the construction and remodeling goes. As time goes on I hope to be able to post more regularly than I used to and allow people to stay up to date on what is going on in my fascinating life.

Happy blogging.

Healthy?

Well I’ve worked out 2 out of the last 3 days and gone to the pool the last 2 days. We got passes for the Gurnee pool. It is an okay place. A few slides and some water, I guess that is all you need.

I will say that I miss diving boards a lot. I miss the high dive the most. I think one of the most thrilling/terrifying feelings in life is free fall. That is why I love the Giant Drop at Great America.

Not much else going on. I mostly emptied out my inbox today which is something I like to do once a year. Respond to e-mails that have been sitting there for months. My web page is almost done being updated to XHTML. It is very tedious process but it makes me happy to be compliant with standards.

The weekend is pretty loose right now. I’m leaving on Sunday for a physics conference but not much else going on. Perhaps a work meeting Saturday morning and I suppose more swimming. The only real downside of swimming is that I have to wear sunscreen which is almost as annoying as bug spray.

Night.

Hello…

Summer has begun and it is a little boring. I went to camp for a week which was nice. I did a lot of manual labor and came back 5 pounds heavier. I am telling myself it is muscle, but I ate a lot of food while I was there, so I’m not so sure. I actually bought new shows yesterday which is rare for me. They are of the slip on variety with no laces. Something new for me, but a fun little change.

While at camp I did a lot of hiking and some alone thinking and I am really being eaten up inside that I really pissed off a friend and I don’t know how to make things better. I am mailing a card now to that effect, we’ll see.

Next week I am off to my physics conference for 3 weeks with sweet, sweet dorm food. I get to learn about teaching physics using models. I don’t fully know what that means, but it is supposed to be pretty sweet. Then I return and football camp starts and then it is downhill until school starts up.

I am supposed to study for my GRE some time this summer, but I have been pushing that off. I guess it has only been 2 weeks since school ended, but it is going to fly past. Although, after this physics thing, I have very little else to do.

All for now.
